2026 Pokémon TCG Standard Rotation: What Players Need to Know

The Pokémon Trading Card Game competitive landscape is about to shift once again. The 2026 Pokémon TCG Standard format rotation has officially been announced, and it will bring meaningful changes for players preparing for the upcoming Championship Series season.

Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a newer player looking to jump into organized play, here’s a complete breakdown of what’s changing, when it takes effect, and how to prepare.

When Does the 2026 Standard Rotation Begin?

The Standard format rotation will go into effect on:

  • April 10, 2026 for in-person Play! Pokémon events
  • March 26, 2026 for Pokémon TCG Live

The earlier digital rotation gives players an opportunity to test decks, experiment with new strategies, and refine lists before attending physical tournaments.

Why Pokémon TCG Uses Rotation

Every Championship Series season, Play! Pokémon rotates older cards out of the Standard format to maintain a healthy and balanced competitive environment. Rotation:

  • Encourages creative deck building and new strategies
  • Prevents the format from becoming stagnant
  • Lowers the barrier of entry for new players by focusing on recent releases

Both in-person events and Pokémon TCG Live follow the same rotation rules to ensure a consistent competitive experience across platforms.

The 2026 Standard Format Explained

With the 2026 rotation, cards with the “G” regulation mark will no longer be legal in Standard play.

Legal Regulation Marks for 2026:

  • H
  • I
  • J
  • Any future regulation marks released later

It’s important to note that card legality is determined by regulation mark, not by expansion. Even if a card appears in a newer set, it will not be legal if its regulation mark has rotated out.

To check legality, look at the bottom of the card for its regulation mark.

Tournament Legality Timing

New cards still follow the standard waiting period and become tournament legal two weeks after their official release.

Using Older Prints of Legal Cards

Older versions of cards without regulation marks may still be used, as long as a current legal version of that card exists.

Examples:

  • Rare Candy from Sun & Moon is legal because Rare Candy from Mega Evolution has an “I” regulation mark.
  • Boss’s Orders from Sword & Shield—Rebel Clash can still be used because a newer print from Mega Evolution carries an “I” regulation mark.

Always double-check the Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook to confirm which reprints are allowed.

Expanded Format for 2026

The Expanded format remains unchanged for 2026 and will continue to include cards from the Black & White Series forward.

As with Standard:

  • New expansions become legal two weeks after release
  • Players should confirm which format is being used before attending an event

Pokémon TCG Live & Expanded

Pokémon TCG Live does not currently support all Expanded cards. Backward compatibility is being rolled out in phases, with more Expanded support expected later this year.
